Administration

Shawn Morris

Executive Director

Bachelor of Science in Physical Education received from the University of New Mexico Master of Arts in Elementary Education attained from the University of New Mexico Administration License issued by the New Mexico Public Education Department 25 years of experience in the education sector as a teacher and administrator.

I chose to pursue a career in education with the aim of ensuring that students have the most positive and fulfilling school experience possible. Reflecting on my own less-than-pleasant school years, I realized the limited influence students often had over educational decisions. Despite doubts about my academic performance and behavior from others, I remained steadfast in my pursuit of a college education, driven by a deep-seated desire to make a difference. My passion lies in introducing students to the myriad opportunities available to them and equipping them with the skills necessary to overcome life’s challenges. I find joy in spending time with my family, fishing, traveling, cooking, and simply relaxing on the beach.

Venessa Urioste

Assistant Director

I am a passionate educator that has served varied grade level students, in particular meeting the needs of multilingual learners, special needs students, in Title 1 schools. As a lifelong resident of Albuquerque’s South Valley my ‘why’ has always been to provide the best education in order to positively impact my students and help guide them towards building a purposeful future and in turn a healthier community. As the Assistant Director, I am fortunate that I get to guide and support Instruction and Curriculum. My goal is to ensure students gain content knowledge and skills they can apply beyond the classroom. I want to ensure all students’ goals are supported through various opportunities that we provide, and that they gain experiences that help lead them to college and / or career choices they feel passionate about. Within my 25 years as an educator, I have earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the University of New Mexico. I have earned my Admin License, a Level 3, K-12 license and a National Board Certified teacher. With 23 of those years as a classroom teacher, educating students in a standards-based, culturally responsive, literature focused, student-centered, diverse curriculum. I have taught dual credit education courses through Central New Mexico for the past 5 years, including the supervision of their practicum hours in elementary and middle school classrooms. For the past two years I have worked with the NM Public Education Department analyzing and developing essential standards for English Language Arts, as well as a curriculum evaluator of Culturally and Linguistically Responsive materials. I have served as a teacher leader within APS, leading professional development, mentoring national board candidates, and supporting other teachers in many capacities to help them meet all students’ needs. I advocate on behalf of teachers in order to make teaching and learning more manageable for us as teachers, as well as to better serve our students in a more equitable manner. I firmly believe that teachers’ accomplishments, and in turn students’ academic achievement, occurs if we have our voices heard and have some control over the learning environment. There are innovative ways that schools can lessen the stress and make all stakeholders feel empowered if we can collectively create solutions for the optimal school community. Favorite things to do~ definitely running or riding my bike in the Bosque along the Rio Grande! Can’t find a more peaceful way to reflect and take care of my health!

A Word from our Executive Director

“When I graduated from high school, I wasn’t prepared for life after high school. I was ill-prepared for college and I had no idea what I was to become because I didn’t know about the various opportunities out there in the world. Eventually, I got on track due to caring teachers who mentored me and helped me to see that I could learn and achieve what I used to think was not possible.”
