Our Governing Council meets in-person monthly. Beginning in SY 2024-2025, our governing council began live streaming their meetings on Zoom. You can find meeting agendas, minutes and recordings here.

Melissa Armijo

President

Melissa Armijo currently sits as the President of the Mark Armijo Academy Governing Board and is the wife of the late Mark Armijo, the school’s namesake. She has been involved with the school since it was instituted as Nuestros Valores and has been on the Board since 2016. A lifelong resident of the South Valley, Melissa attended the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University and currently works in the Dean of Students Office at UNM.

Charlotte Alderete

Board Member

Mark Armijo Academy Board Member, Charlotte Alderete-Trujillo, has worked in education for nearly twenty years and holds a B.A. in elementary education from New Mexico State University and received here Administrative Licensure from Santa Fe Community College. She was introduced to MAA when a friend approached her about joining the Mark Armijo Academy Governing Board and has since enjoyed her experiences with the school. As a school leader herself, she is particularly appreciative of MAA’s small size.

Abby Herrera

Board Member

Abby Herrera is a newly-elected board member for Nuestros Valores Charter School. She has been employed with the State of New Mexico for the past 14 years. As a union steward, she represents classified State employees when they need to file a grievance. She attended Central New Mexico Community College in Albuquerque where she majored in accounting. She has worked since she was a freshman in high school (many years back). She is determined to instill the same work ethic and morals to her children as she is a single mother of four.  Even though her last 2 children have not been easy she is very thankful that her children respect the fact that all she wants for them is to get a good education and succeed in life.

Anna Duran

Board Member

Dr. Anna Duran was born in New Mexico and grew up in the South Valley of Albuquerque. She graduated from Rio Grande High School and completed her undergraduate degree at the University of New Mexico. After completing medical school, she became a pediatrician at UNM Hospital, where she has worked since 2005. She has held many leadership positions within UNM School of Medicine and is now the Chief Medical Officer for UNM Children’s Hospital. Through relationship-building and mentoring, Dr. Duran is committed to giving back to her community and ensuring that the next generation has the chance to be successful.

Joseph P. Roybal-Sánchez

Board Member

Dr. Joseph P. Roybal-Sánchez is State Director for AARP New Mexico. Prior to joining AARP, he spent nine years leading government and public relations for the University of New Mexico College of Nursing and has spent his career as an advocate for k-12 education, older adults, and nursing education. His previous leadership roles included serving as Executive Director of the New Mexico Center for Nursing Excellence. He also served as program director at the New Mexico Public Education Department for nearly 13 years. Dr. Roybal-Sánchez is a Veteran and served as a Commander in the U.S. Navy.

Dr. Roybal-Sánchez’s academic career includes a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of New Mexico, Masters and Bachelor of Business Administration from New Mexico Highlands University, a Certificate in Naval Integrated Logistics from the Navy Supply Corps School, Advanced Change Management Certification from Prosci Inc. and Leading Change Certification from Vanderbilt University. His personal work philosophy comes from
