Student Activities at Mark Armijo Academy

Dream Makers

Thursday at Lunch in Room 10

  • Go off campus to UNM to see what medical professionals are doing there
  • You may get to dissect a pig!
  • Pizza party
  • You will participate in activities related to identity development & promotion, cultural humility, community engagement, health careers exploration, academic preparation, and service-learning.

YMCA Youth Government

Tuesdays at Lunch in Room 17

  • Stay in Santa Fe for 3 days/2 nights for a conference. All expenses paid!
    • Attend this and there will be other potential conferences (out of state) and potential work opportunities for you.
  • You get a say in what is important and needed in your community– you will be doing what politicians do.
  • Minimal work involved outside of meetings and a few events to attend
  • You will be provided with professional clothing for the conference
  • Starts Tuesday Oct 1st at lunch & must be available Saturday, Oct 5 4-7 pm (MAA can offer you transportation)

Self Defense/Fitness

Fridays at lunch in Room 9

  • Learn about situational awareness
  • Learn practical, basic self defense moves along with some fitness training.
  • Build confidence and a basic understanding of self defense in a safe and welcoming environment.

Video Game Club

Tuesdays from 2:45-3:45 in the Commons

  • Video games oh my!
  • Video games may include Fortnite, Call of Duty, Red Dead Redemption II, Rainbow Six Siege, and many more. Join us!
  • Following dates: 10/8, 10/15, 10/22, 11/12, 11/19, 11/26, 12/10, 12/17, 1/14, 1/21, 1/28, 2/11, 2/18, 2/25, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25, 4/8, 4/15, 4/22, 4/29, 5/13, 5/20

Alphabet Soup (GSA)

Every 1st and 3rd Monday of the month at Lunch w/Mr. Rios in Room 17 (starts in November)

  • Learn and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and identity
  • Talk about various media such as art, television and film, poetry, and history
  • A fast food meal will be provided
  • We may have some guest speakers and open conversations with local community leaders in the LGBTQ+ Movement

Hermanitas (Latina/o)

Once a month on Saturdays | 9:45-noon in the Commons

  • Take part in the group that is about exploring your Latino identity and the resources and strengths of our communities, and available to our communities
  • Mental Health, NM Legislation, Higher education and going to college, Learning about our Latino culture, Self-awareness and Forming one’s own Identity, and Financial Literacy, to name a few.
  • Potential for scholarships
  • On the following Saturdays: 09/21 – 10/19 – 11/16 – 12/14 then in 2025 : 01/18, 02/15, 03/15, 04/19 and 05/17

Mariachi Club

Mondays & Wednesdays from 2:45-4:45 in Room 17

  • Develop your singing and music skills
  • Meal and instruments are provided.
  • Learn to play guitar, guittaron, trumpet, violin… and sing!
  • 0.5 credit hours per semester

    Driver's Ed

    Helping students complete the state requirements for driver’s education.

    In New Mexico, public high schools are required to offer a driver education program to students. In 2000, New Mexico instituted a three-stage graduated driver licensing (GDL) system. Completing a driver education course is part of the GDL requirements.

    The Mark Armijo Driver’s Education curriculum is an opportunity for students to:

    • Learn about the current New Mexico Motor Vehicle Laws.
    • Develop the proper attitude towards driving.
    • Be introduced to the necessary skills needed for driving.
    • Fulfill New Mexico’s requirement for completing a 56-hour classroom instruction course with 0 (zero) behind-the-wheel training.
    • Earn a 0.5 elective credit after successfully completing the course requirements.

    To be eligible for Mark Armijo Academy’s driver’s education course applicants must:

    • Be fifteen years old, or turn fifteen years old, before the end of the semester.
    • Not be over the age of eighteen.
    • Be a currently enrolled student at Mark Armijo Academy.
    • Have no more than two absences, excused or unexcused, from the course during the semester.

    Internships

    Future Focused Group Internships
    • Students are offered a class in which they will interview with Future Focused Education for the Spring of 2025. 
    • Job description will be offered and paid for 10 weeks of work.

    • Class is expected to be held at various locations and students provided hands on experience with IT

    • Students are exploring the world of IT thought partnerships of FFE and Explora. 

    • There is the opportunity for students to earn certifications in IT.

    Community Partner Internships
    • Students are placed in an organization closely related to an area of interest.

    • Student’s hours and pay are dependent based on each student’s schedule. 

    • Students are given a job description for their role at their community partner site

    • Community partners will receive evaluations for student performance based on CTE standards. 

    • Student and Community partners will fill out feedback forms after the program.

    Onsite Internships
    • Canteen / Lunch – Students earn a Food Handlers certification and work in the Kitchen to prepare meals for lunch.
